Should You Cut a Cup Holder Into Your Gaming Desk? Four Measurements Decide It

The idea always arrives the same way. Something gets clipped mid-round, you catch it before it goes over, nothing spills, and then you sit there with your pulse in your ears while the next map loads, thinking: I should just cut a hole in this thing.

It is not a stupid idea. It is the only answer in this whole category that actually gets the drink out of the way, because the container ends up below the surface instead of standing on it. Every clamp, clip and fold-out ring is a piece of plastic bolted to the edge of a desk you picked partly for its lines. A recess is invisible until you use it. That is a real argument and the setup communities are right to keep raising it.

It is also the only change you can make to a desk that has no undo.

So treat it as what it is: a geometry problem. Four measurements settle it. Three of them are underneath your desk, and the one everyone checks first — how thick is the top — turns out to be the least decisive of the four.

First, what you would actually be installing

Most people picture a hole. The mod is a hole plus a fixture, and the fixture sets the numbers.

The standard drop-in beverage insert — the same part that goes into boats, RVs and poker tables, and the part you will end up buying, because nobody machines a bare recess into a desk and leaves raw particleboard as the cup's inner wall — wants a 3-5/8 inch cutout. Hold those two numbers for the rest of this page. A 3-5/8 inch bore is considerably bigger than most people are picturing when they say "a hole for my drink." And 3.15 inches of depth is deeper than any desk you own is thick.

Measurement 1: how thick your top is, and what is inside it

The first row is the one that ends projects, and it ends a lot of them. IKEA's board-on-frame tops list their materials plainly: a fiberboard top and bottom, a particleboard frame around the rim, and a honeycomb structure paper filling in between. Run a 3-5/8 inch hole saw through the middle of a LINNMON and you take off a thin fiberboard skin, pass through a paper void, and come out the other skin. There is no board in there to hold an insert. The locking ring that is supposed to tighten against the underside has an eighth of an inch of fiberboard to bite on. IKEA's own load guidance for the same top — 110 lb distributed, but avoid concentrated weight over 33 lb on a small surface — is the same fact stated politely.

You can check this in ten seconds without buying anything. Knock on your desk two inches in from the edge, then knock on it in the middle. Solid at the rim and hollow in the middle is board-on-frame, and that is a no. If your first desk is a LINNMON or LAGKAPTEN on ADILS legs or an ALEX pedestal — which describes a very large share of first battlestations — you have your answer already.

Steel is the other complication, and it is a sneakier one than it sounds. Secretlab lists the MAGNUS Evo's desk top construction as "MDF with Steel" on a steel frame, but the top is a hybrid rather than a uniform steel skin: a soft-touch laminate where your hands rest, with a full-length metal rear edge. Secretlab's own desk comparison is explicit that the Evo is not the single-panel full metal top the MAGNUS Pro is (Secretlab). So you cannot rule this desk in or out from the doorway. You have a 0.8 inch composite top with steel in it and a steel frame under it, and nothing on the surface tells you which of those your chosen spot sits over. Find sheet steel with a wood hole saw and it stops; buy a bi-metal one that will cut it and you are cutting sheet metal on the piece of furniture you sit at, with the swarf falling toward your tower. On a full-metal top there is nothing to discuss at all — that is not a woodworking job.

Then there is the arithmetic that catches everyone who clears the construction check. The insert is 3.15 inches deep. Your top is one inch. About 2 1/8 inches of plastic is going to hang below your desk, and on a 0.8 inch top it is closer to 2 3/8. That is not a footnote. That is measurement two.

Measurement 2: what is under the exact spot you want it

This is the squeeze, and it is the reason this mod fails more often than the internet's photos suggest.

You already know where the drink needs to be. Within a relaxed reach, off the mat, outside the arc the mouse arm sweeps — which on almost every setup means the strip along the front edge or the near side edge. That is not a preference; it is the only real estate left.

Now go underneath that strip with a phone light. That is where your thighs are at seated height. In the canonical KARLBY build it is where the five-drawer ALEX pedestal is, so the insert would protrude into the top drawer. If you have a keyboard tray, it is where the tray rails are. And on a sit-stand frame it is the neighbourhood of the crossbar, the control box and the cable tray — UPLIFT's own accessory instructions tell you that using a grommet hole already in your desktop is acceptable, "or drill a hole anywhere on the desktop, taking care to avoid frame hardware underneath" (UPLIFT, Range-X monitor arm instructions) — and that is advice for a bolt-through fitting that ends up nearly flush. Yours sticks down two inches.

There is a nastier version of this. A hole saw's pilot bit finds a steel crossbar before you do, and it finds it at the moment the teeth are already three quarters of an inch into a finished desktop. There is no graceful recovery from that.

So the honest form of measurement two is: the places on a gaming desk where a drink belongs and the places with two clear inches underneath are close to disjoint sets. The middle-rear of the desk has clearance and is useless to you. The front strip is where you want it and is full of knees, drawers and hardware.

Measurement 3: where the drain points

This is the part nobody thinks about until it is cut, and it is the most interesting thing on this page.

The insert's instructions tell you to drill a drain hole in the bottom with a 7/16 inch bit. That is honest engineering, not an oversight — a recess collects liquid, so the manufacturer gives it somewhere to go. Condensation off a cold can runs down the outside and pools in the bottom of the cup. The last inch of an energy drink goes in when you set the can back one-handed without looking. Over a long session it adds up.

In a boat that drain goes overboard. In a car it goes onto a rubber mat. Under a gaming desk it goes onto whatever is down there, and on a battlestation what is down there is the tower — usually with a bottom-mounted PSU drawing air through a filter in the floor of the case — plus a power strip, a surge protector and carpet. You would be cutting a funnel into your desk and aiming it at the second most expensive object in the room.

Leave the drain out and you have the other problem: a sump. Standing liquid sitting against the wall of the bore, and the bore is raw. Cut edges and drilled holes take on moisture faster than a finished face and are the first place a composite panel shows movement (MDF Direct). IKEA is unusually direct about this on the exact desktop this crowd buys: the KARLBY care instructions say to treat the edges and cut-outs with wood treatment oil prior to installation, and that the countertop is not suitable for use in damp rooms. That is written for a kitchen. It reads as an instruction for your cup recess, because it is the same instruction.

Neither branch of this is fatal on its own. Both of them are work you have to plan for before the saw touches the veneer, and neither is in anybody's build photo.

Measurement 4: how permanent your setup is, and whose desk this is

A recess is one diameter, in one spot, permanently. Take those separately, because the first one is worse than it sounds.

One diameter. A 3.515 inch inside diameter around a slim energy can of roughly 2.1 inches leaves nearly an inch and a half of slop; the can stands in there at an angle and rattles when the frame shakes. A purpose-built cup grommet for live gaming tables goes the other way — 80 mm outside, 70 mm (2.76 inches) inside, 57 mm deep (Gaming Support) — which takes a 12 oz can at about 2.6 inches with millimetres to spare and will not take a 40 oz tumbler at all. A handled mug's handle fouls the flange either way. In other words the recess is exactly as fixed-size and exactly as fussy as the fold-out plastic ring your budget desk shipped with, the one the setup subreddits treat as a punchline. It is just permanent.

One spot. Setups move. People switch mouse hands after an injury, go from dual 27s to a single ultrawide, add a monitor arm that changes where the keyboard sits, move apartments, rotate the desk to a different wall to fix a window glare. The hole does not move with any of that.

Whose desk. A meaningful slice of the people asking this question are on dorm furniture, a landlord's desk, a hand-me-down, or a desk they intend to resell when they upgrade. There is no version of this you undo cleanly. Filling a cup holder hole is a real woodworking chore and the patch never quite disappears under a laminate or a veneer.

Before you cut: you may already have the hole

This is the answer for a real slice of readers and almost nobody mentions it.

Standard desk cable grommets commonly come in two sizes, 60 mm and 80 mm. 80 mm is 3.15 inches — about half an inch narrower than the 3-5/8 inch drop-in cutout, but still comfortably wide enough to hold a drink. UPLIFT's grommets are all 80 mm, and they sell a locking storage cup that drops straight into one: it needs a hole of at least 3.15 inches (80 mm) and no more than 3.35 inches (85 mm), and it locks with a ring you thread on from underneath (UPLIFT instructions, ACC059); UPLIFT's grommet comparison chart puts its desktop thickness compatibility at 3/4 to 1-3/4 inches (UPLIFT). No saw, no dust, no decision you cannot reverse in thirty seconds.

Two catches, and both are honest.

The first is size. 60 mm is 2.36 inches. A 12 oz can is about 2.6. It does not go in, and no amount of wanting changes that — if your desk's grommets are the smaller size, the free option is off the table.

The second catch is the one that matters more, and it is a genuinely useful thing to know before you start measuring anything: the grommet is in the wrong place. UPLIFT's grommet holes sit about 2.5 inches from the rear edge of the desktop (desktop configuration guide). On a desk 24 to 30 inches deep, two and a half inches from the back is behind your monitor stands. Reaching a drink there means leaning past the screens and looking at what you are doing — which is the precise thing you are trying to avoid, since the whole failure mode you are solving for is the blind reach mid-round.

That is worth sitting with, because it generalises. The hole your desk already has was positioned for cables. Cables do not need to be found by feel in the dark with a round in progress.

If you are doing it anyway, do it properly

None of the above says never. It says the shortlist of desks and locations where this works is smaller than it looks. If yours is on it:

  1. Confirm the construction before you buy anything. Knock test, then check the manufacturer's material list — IKEA publishes every board's composition on the product page — and look at an existing cut edge or cable hole if there is one.
  2. Buy the insert first and cut to its published cutout, not to a can you measured. The insert defines the hole; the can does not.
  3. Mock the location for a full session. Cut the hole in a piece of cardboard, tape it where you think it goes, and play. Then go underneath with a light and confirm the two inches of clearance is genuinely there — frame, crossbar, control box, cable tray, drawer box, and your own thigh at seated height.
  4. Score before you saw. Veneer chips because saw teeth splinter thin surface layers; scoring the cut line with a straightedge and a sharp knife before the blade arrives is the standard fix (Rockler), and it is cheaper than a chipped walnut face you look at every day.
  5. Clamp a sacrificial backer underneath so the exit side does not blow out.
  6. Corded drill, side handle, low speed, both hands, peck the cut. Hole saws bind when they choke with dust or wander off axis, and on large diameters the kickback from a powerful drill can be severe — long side handles are the standard recommendation (Hole saw, Wikipedia). A 3-5/8 inch saw that grabs turns the drill body, and the drill body is in your hands over your own desk.
  7. Seal the bore before the insert goes in. Oil or finish, more than one coat, right into the end grain. This is the step everyone skips and the one the manufacturer explicitly asks for.
  8. Decide about the drain before you drill it. Either route it somewhere that is not your PC, or accept that you have built a sump and commit to wiping it out.

The verdict, plainly

Cut it if your top is solid through, you own the desk outright, the spot you actually want has two clear inches under it, your layout has been stable for a year or more, you drink out of one consistent container, and you are willing to seal the bore and deal with the drain.

Do not cut it if your top is board-on-frame with honeycomb filling, or steel-clad, or under an inch with a drawer unit, a crossbar or your knees beneath the only spot that makes sense; if the desk is rented, borrowed, dorm-issued or destined for resale; if your drinks range from a slim can to a 40 oz tumbler; or if you are reading this at one in the morning because you nearly lost a keyboard at midnight. Nothing decided in that state should be irreversible.

What most people are actually after

Almost nobody wants a hole in their desk. They want a drink that survives a forearm and a blind reach, and they have concluded that the only way to get that is to capture the container below the surface — because everything sold to sit on the surface is either a coaster, which does nothing when the arm arrives, or a clamp, which brings its own fit problem. A representative clamp-on holder specs a maximum desktop thickness of 2.25 inches, a 2.6 to 3.6 inch adjustment range and a 3 lb capacity (VIVO); a 1.5 inch KARLBY with a lip, or a thick slab, or a full 40 oz tumbler, walks straight out of that envelope.

There is a third answer, and it is the one you can undo.

A container tips when its centre of mass travels far enough sideways to pass outside the footprint it is standing on. A slim can's own footprint is about 2.1 inches across, which is why a graze is enough. The honest limits, since this page has been counting other people's: it is not a mount, a clamp, a strap or a restraint, and a direct hard knock still wins. It does not insulate or seal. Handled mugs are a straight no — the handle lands exactly where a fin needs to grip. It sinks, so it is the wrong object for a boat. The hole is a permanent answer to a question your setup is going to keep changing. Take the four measurements first. If they all come back clean and the desk is yours, a recessed holder is a legitimate piece of woodworking and it will look better than anything you clamp on. If even one comes back bad — and on most battlestations at least one does — the useful move is to stop treating it as a carpentry problem and start treating it as a stability one.
